Best proportions for an oval diamond
The ‘cut’ of a diamond refers to the alignment of angles (facets), proportion and dimensions of a diamond.
These elements determine the sparkle and brilliance of a diamond. Diamonds are graded based on their cut as either; excellent, very good, fair and poor. Similar to the round brilliant cut, Oval Diamonds maximise brilliance and sparkle due to their perfectly faceting cut, reflecting light and sparkle like no other.
Oval diamonds maximise carat weight, giving you a much larger-looking diamond than some other cuts. All diamonds in the Simon Curwood Diamond Collection are guaranteed to be non-recirculated, ethically mined diamonds. All SC Diamonds are hand selected by our international diamond buyer, undergo rigorous quality control and are each certified by the same independent diamond agency, ensuring consistency and brilliance with each SC Diamond. Frequently Asked Questions
What is an oval cut diamond?
Oval cut diamonds are simply, as the name suggests, oval in shape - an elongated round brilliant cut. Oval cuts have the brilliance of a round diamond, but offer a more unique shape for those who want the sparkle of a round cut but something slightly different in shape. They are an on-trend fancy cut diamond that can look larger than a round diamond of similar carat size when well cut.
How many facets in an oval cut diamond?
Generally, oval diamonds are cut in the brilliant style, which means the diamond has 57 or 58 facets. It has similar visual qualities to a standard round brilliant.
What is the best length to width ratio for an oval diamond?
Understanding diamond ratios is essential for fancy cut diamonds. The ratio will reflect how perfect the diamond’s shape is.
A well-proportioned oval cut should have a length-to-width ratio of between 1.25-1.50. A cut whose ratio is below 1.25 starts to look too round and any cut over a ratio of 1.50 will look very narrow (and will resemble a marquise shape).
Do oval diamonds look bigger?
When comparing an oval diamond to a round diamond of the same carat weight, the elongated shape of the oval makes it appear larger than the round - it covers more surface area. When comparing shapes side by side, to the naked eye, the oval cut diamond will look larger because it covers more of your finger.
